Crowdsourcing Epistolary Metadata of the Republic of Letters (CEMROL)
SKILLNET aims at harvesting, with the help of the crowd, the metadata of letters from scanned versions of printed letter collections which are in the Open Domain. The challenge is to identity single letters in each of these scanned books and capture the metadata (sender, recipient, date, place of sending, and place of reception) of each single letter. The underlying Zotero database currently contains the title descriptions of 1874 printed editions of early modern letters (letters written before 1800). The entries contain fields for the author(s)/editor(s), title, place of publication, publisher(s), year(s) of publication, shelf mark of the individual copy, and a language code. The authors have been linked to the VIAFs and the place names have been standardized using Geonames. An innovative crowdsourcing platform that has been developed in collaboration with Utrecht’s Digital Humanities Lab will be launched on 14 December 2018!
